Ashes Under Leather

Lyrics

Verse 1
I rode in on a dead-end road
Boots full of mud, eyes full of coal
Saw that contract under your name
Sealed with wax and a devil’s flame

Fingers quick, I slid it free
From the pocket where it shouldn’t be
You heard that chain start to ring
When I took your last thing

Pre-Chorus
Now the night went thin
And the hounds woke up
I tore out fast
With the whole damn luck

He came calling hard
From the hill of bones
I laughed in the dark
And I twisted the throttle home

Chorus
Ghost rider, take that paper
Ghost rider, run him down
I stole your claim
And I burned it out
Ghost rider, take that paper
Ghost rider, hear me now
Devil at my heels
But I ain’t slowing down

Verse 2
He came with a grin of smoke
A black suit, a crooked joke
Said, “Boy, that page is mine”
I said, “Not tonight, not this time”

We hit that river bend
Tires screaming through the sand
He reached for my collar
I threw dust in his hand

Pre-Chorus
He breathed my name
Like a curse in prayer
I spit my blood
And I let him stare

The moon got red
When I crossed that line
He lost my trail
In a string of fire

Chorus
Ghost rider, take that paper
Ghost rider, run him down
I stole your claim
And I burned it out
Ghost rider, take that paper
Ghost rider, hear me now
Devil at my heels
But I ain’t slowing down

Bridge
I crossed that bridge of rust and rain
With a rattled heart and a stolen chain
If he wants me back, let him come alone
I’m already half way home

Chorus
Ghost rider, take that paper
Ghost rider, run him down
I stole your claim
And I burned it out
Ghost rider, take that paper
Ghost rider, hear me now
Devil at my heels
But I ain’t slowing down

Outro
Yeah, I ain’t slowing down
No, I ain’t slowing down
Ghost rider on the blacktop now
And the devil can’t catch my sound
