Golden Compass spinning
by KayLaLa
Lyrics
Intro — whispered, distant piano
I wanted love.
I wanted a home.
I wanted little footsteps
running down the hall.
So I gave up pieces of myself
and called it a beautiful life.
I became a mother.
And then one day…
They took my children away.
Verse 1 — soft, haunting
I wasn't asking for a castle,
I wasn't asking to be crowned.
I just wanted little arms around me,
little voices making noise in my house.
I traded sleep for lullabies,
my dreams for their dreams too.
I thought if I gave them all my love,
love would carry us through.
But somebody wrote a story
that I never got to read.
They turned my children into objects
and turned my motherhood into a deed.
And everybody had an answer
except the one I needed most—
Why?
Pre-Chorus — building
Why did nobody ask their hearts?
Why did nobody hear them cry?
Why did everybody know the verdict
before they ever told me why?
Chorus — huge, emotional
Like a golden compass spinning
in a world without a sky,
my heart kept pointing toward my children
while they kept asking me goodbye.
They ripped the map right from our hands,
tore the stars out of the night.
They separated hearts that knew each other
before they knew how to fight.
You can take a photograph,
you can take a name,
you can take the little things
that children leave behind—
But you can't take the bond
between a mother and her child.
You can't make my heart forget
where home is.
Verse 2 — darker
[drum solo leading to a fading lead guitarist never reaching climax]
They told me pieces of a story,
but the pieces didn't fit.
Every question met a silence,
every truth got buried in it.
I kept looking for the doorway
where somebody would explain,
How did loving them become a crime?
How did motherhood become a chain?
I would've listened.
I would've changed.
I would've fought for what was true.
But nobody gave me the why
that would've helped me understand
what happened to me and you.
Pre-Chorus — restrained anger
Don't tell me children are possessions.
Don't tell me love can disappear.
You can't measure years of memories
with signatures and papers here.
You didn't see the mornings.
You didn't hear the dreams.
You didn't know the little secret language
that existed between us three.
Chorus — bigger
Like a golden compass spinning
in a world without a sky,
my heart kept pointing toward my children
while they kept asking me goodbye.
They ripped the map right from our hands,
tore the stars out of the night.
They separated hearts that knew each other
before they knew how to fight.
You can take a photograph,
you can take a name,
you can take the little things
that children leave behind—
But you can't take the bond
between a mother and her child.
You can't make my heart forget
where home is.
Bridge — piano only, almost spoken
Maybe someday they'll ask:
"Mama… why did you let us go?"
And I'll have to tell them—
"I didn't."
I searched every road.
I called every star.
I carried your names
inside my heart.
I was looking for the door
that somebody locked.
I was searching for the truth
that somebody lost.
And if you ever wondered
whether I stopped loving you—
Look at the compass.
It never stopped pointing home.
[Instrumental — strings rise, blues guitar enters]
Verse 3 — powerful, hopeful
I don't know what they told you.
I don't know what you were shown.
I don't know which pieces of our story
you were forced to call your own.
But I know what I remember.
I remember your little hands.
I remember being your shelter.
I remember all our plans.
And whatever lies were written,
whatever chapters disappeared—
There is one truth they cannot bury:
I loved you.
I love you.
And I am still here.
Final Chorus — full cinematic climax
Let the golden compass turn,
let the whole world lose its way.
My heart knows where it's going
even after all these days.
They can tear apart a family,
they can silence someone's voice,
but love remembers every road
and love remembers every choice.
And someday when the questions come,
when somebody finally asks why,
I won't need a thousand words.
I'll just look into their eyes.
And say—
"I never stopped looking for you.
I never stopped loving you.
I never stopped being your mother."
Outro — whispered over piano
The compass still points home.
Through every lie.
Through every mile.
Through every unanswered question.
Home.
Where my children are.
And if they ever wonder
whether I loved them enough…
Tell them—
My heart never learned
how to let them go.
