The Scenic Route

Lyrics

Verse 1

Pulled off on an old two-lane
Just to stretch these tired legs
Found a little river winding
Through a patch of oaks instead

No billboard said to stop there
No postcard gave a clue
Funny how the best discoveries
Are the ones that don't find you

Chorus

Take the scenic route sometimes
Roll the windows all the way down
There's a whole lot more to living
Than just getting where you're bound

Let the world slow your heartbeat
Leave tomorrow where it waits
Life ain't measured by your hurry
It's measured by the breaks you take

Verse 2

Saw an old man on a front porch
Wave like he'd known me for years
Stopped and talked for twenty minutes
Left with stories in my ears

Watched a little girl chase fireflies
While her grandpa smiled nearby
Thought, "Lord, I nearly missed this...
Trying to save a little time."

Chorus

Take the scenic route sometimes
Roll the windows all the way down
There's a whole lot more to living
Than just getting where you're bound

Let the world slow your heartbeat
Leave tomorrow where it waits
Life ain't measured by your hurry
It's measured by the breaks you take

Bridge

The road'll still be there tomorrow
The work'll still get done
But these little moments disappear
One by one by one

So don't blink through all the blessings
Trying to beat the clock
Sometimes the longest road...
Is the one that gives you the most

Final Chorus

Take the scenic route sometimes
Call your folks and stay awhile
Stop for pie at that old diner
Watch another sunset smile

Leave a little room for wonder
Leave a little room for grace
'Cause someday you'll look back thankful
For the roads you didn't race

Yeah, take the scenic route sometimes...

Life's too beautiful...
To drive right by.
