How to Turn Lyrics Into a Song

  1. Paste your lyrics

Add up to 5,000 characters and mark the parts of the song with tags on their own line: [Verse], [Chorus], [Bridge]. The tags tell the AI where the melody should lift for the chorus and change for the bridge.

  2. Describe the sound

In the style box, say what it should sound like: the genre, the mood, the instruments, the tempo and the voice, in up to 1,000 characters. Then choose a female or male singer.

  3. Generate

In about 30 seconds you get two full versions of the song with your lyrics sung over a complete arrangement. Each one takes the melody somewhere different, so keep the one you like best.

  4. Fine-tune it

With Pro, fix what isn't right without starting over: replace any 6 to 20 second section, extend the song with a new part, or remaster it, for 10 credits each.

How to Format Your Lyrics

Put each section tag on its own line, then the lines of that section underneath. Write the chorus out in full every time it comes round: a chorus written once is usually sung once. A song that works well often looks like this:

[Verse]
Coffee's cold, the kitchen light is on
Your coat is still hanging where it's always gone

[Chorus]
Leave the porch light burning
I'll find my way home
Leave the porch light burning
I won't be gone long

[Verse]
Rain on the window, radio low
Counting the miles that I've still got to go

[Chorus]
Leave the porch light burning
I'll find my way home
Leave the porch light burning
I won't be gone long

Tips for Lyrics That Sing Well

  • Keep lines short. Six to ten syllables a line is easy to sing. Long sentences get squeezed or rushed.
  • Give the chorus a hook. One short line that comes back, ideally the title, gives the melody something to build on.
  • Keep a steady rhythm. Lines of similar length within a section sound more natural than one long line next to a short one.
  • Spell names and unusual words as they sound. If a name comes out wrong, write it the way it’s said, for example “Neev” for Niamh.
  • Keep directions out of the lyrics. Notes like “guitar solo here” or “(slow down)” can end up being sung, so describe the arrangement in the style box instead.

Describe the Sound in the Style Box

The same lyrics can become a stripped-back ballad or a stadium anthem. Name a genre, a mood, two or three instruments, a tempo and the kind of voice. Some starting points:

ForType in the style box
Acoustic singer-songwriterAcoustic folk, finger-picked guitar, soft piano, warm male vocal, slow and intimate
Radio popUpbeat pop, punchy drums, bright synths, confident female vocal, catchy and polished
Rock anthemDriving rock, distorted guitars, big drums, raspy male vocal, building to a huge final chorus
Late-night R&BSmooth R&B, slow groove, warm bass, airy female vocal with harmonies
Country storyCountry, steel guitar and fiddle, mid-tempo, storytelling male vocal

Hear Your Lyrics in Your Own Voice

With Pro, record a 10 to 30 second sample of your voice, and SoundLab AI creates a voice model from it. Choose it when you make a song and your lyrics come back sung in your own voice. You can keep up to five voices, and cloning costs no credits. You can only clone your own voice.

No Lyrics Yet? Describe the Song

Switch to Easy mode and describe what the song is about instead, and the AI writes the lyrics and sings them. For a personal song, give it names and details: our birthday song generator puts someone's name in the chorus. On Pro, the AI lyric writer drafts lyrics you can edit before you make the song.

After the Song Is Made

A few minutes after it's made, your song's lyrics are timed word by word, so you can turn it into a lyric video with the free music visualizer in square, widescreen or vertical format. Share the song's page with a link, and with Pro, download it as an MP3 or WAV and use it commercially, including releasing it through a distributor such as DistroKid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn my own lyrics into a song for free?

Yes. New accounts get 10 free credits, which is one song from your lyrics, and every song comes back in two versions. No card is needed. After that, each song costs 10 credits, and Pro gives you 150 credits a week or 600 a month.

How long can my lyrics be?

Up to 5,000 characters, which is plenty for a full song with several verses, a bridge and repeated choruses. Mark the parts with tags such as [Verse], [Chorus] and [Bridge].

Will the AI sing my lyrics exactly as I wrote them?

It sings your words in your order. Now and then a word is stretched or a line repeated to fit the melody, so listen to both versions. With Pro you can replace just the section that came out wrong instead of making the song again.

Can I choose the singer?

Yes: pick a female or male voice, and describe the vocal in the style box, for example "breathy" or "powerful". With Pro you can also clone your own voice from a 10 to 30 second recording and have your lyrics sung in it.

Who owns the song I make from my lyrics?

Songs you create are yours to use. Commercial use, such as releasing the song on Spotify or using it in a monetised video, needs a Pro subscription. Use lyrics you wrote yourself or have permission to use.

Can my lyrics be in another language?

Yes. Write the lyrics in the language you want sung, and say it in the style box too, for example "Spanish pop ballad". Pronunciation can vary between the two versions, so pick the one that sounds right.

What if I don’t have lyrics yet?

Describe the song instead, such as "an upbeat pop song about a road trip with my best friend", and SoundLab AI writes the lyrics and sings them. Pro also has an AI lyric writer that drafts lyrics you can edit before the song is made.
