A Good Last Name

Lyrics

Verse 1
Granddaddy signed his name
On a toolbox lid in grease
Mama packed a sack lunch
Before the sun could touch the trees
Dad came home with callused hands
And mud on both his boots
Said a man is what he leaves
In the way he follows through

Pre-Chorus
He'd say, son, hold your head up
Keep your boots on straight
If you shake somebody's hand
You make that promise stay

Chorus
That's a good last name
Built from sweat and grace
Passed down like a hymn
Through the Sunday rain
When the world gets loud
We still stand the same
That's a good last name
That's a good last name

Verse 2
A porch light over supper
And a truck bed full of hay
Neighbors waved from mailbox rows
On every harvest day
We learned to say yes sir
And to finish what we start
To fix the broke and thank the Lord
For every beating heart

Pre-Chorus
Mama kept the Bible
Beside the coffee can
She said your word means more
Than a ring upon your hand

Chorus
That's a good last name
Built from sweat and grace
Passed down like a hymn
Through the Sunday rain
When the world gets loud
We still stand the same
That's a good last name
That's a good last name

Bridge
And I might not own much
Just a dented pickup and a patch of land
But I know who I am
When I hear that name

Final Chorus
That's a good last name
Built from sweat and grace
Passed down like a hymn
Through the Sunday rain
When my boy looks up
I want him to say
That's a good last name
That's a good last name
