Black Velvet Train

Lyrics

Verse 1
I found your coat on the chair
Black wool, red thread in the seam
Your name still burned on the tag
Like a match in a draughty dream

The kitchen door hangs low
The kettle's gone cold again
And I hear your boots in the hall
Even now, even then

Pre-Chorus
Oh, the floorboards creak your code
Oh, the dark won't let you go
I keep one hand on the latch
Like it might bring you home

Chorus
Black velvet train
Take me down
Black velvet train
Don't make a sound
If I lose my name
Let it go with the rain
Black velvet train
Black velvet train

Verse 2
There was a dog in the yard
Howling at the moonlit wire
And the church bell split the night
Like a coin thrown into fire

I took your photograph down
But the glass kept your face
In the shard by the sink
In the dust, in the place

Pre-Chorus
Oh, the floorboards creak your code
Oh, the dark won't let you go
I keep one hand on the latch
Like it might bring you home

Chorus
Black velvet train
Take me down
Black velvet train
Don't make a sound
If I lose my name
Let it go with the rain
Black velvet train
Black velvet train

Bridge
I saw you once by the river
All white sleeves and coal-black hair
You laughed like a blade in the moon
Then vanished into thin air

So strike up the strings again
Let them mourn what I can't say
If I'm already half gone
Then lead me the rest of the way

Final Chorus
Black velvet train
Take me down
Black velvet train
Don't make a sound
If I lose my name
Let it go with the rain
Black velvet train
Black velvet train
Black velvet train
Take me down
