Ashes in His Hand

Lyrics

Verse 1
He laughs at the sun
Then he shuts the shade
Good things touch his hands
And they come away changed

He finds a warm home
Then he kicks out the door
Anything sweet
He can't stand it no more

Pre-Chorus
'Cause the smile burns him
Like a match to the skin
He hears peace in the room
And he tears right in

Chorus
He turns gold to dust
He turns love to rust
If it feels like peace
He don't know how to trust
He turns gold to dust
He turns love to rust
(ashes in his hand)
(ashes in his hand)

Verse 2
Mama left a plate
He let it go cold
Best man in the town
With a hole in his soul

He'd rather break first
Than wait for the fall
So he swings at the joy
And he ruins it all

Pre-Chorus
'Cause the smile burns him
Like a match to the skin
He hears peace in the room
And he tears right in

Chorus
He turns gold to dust
He turns love to rust
If it feels like peace
He don't know how to trust
He turns gold to dust
He turns love to rust
(ashes in his hand)
(ashes in his hand)

Bridge
Blues Guitar Solo
He stands in the wreck
With the blood on his pride
Says, "Don't let me in
When the light gets bright"

But the night gets tired
And the hard masks crack
One small soft hand
Keeps calling him back

Final Chorus
He turns gold to dust
He turns love to rust
If it feels like peace
He don't know how to trust
He turns gold to dust
He turns love to rust
(ashes in his hand)
(ashes in his hand)
