The Lady Was A Warning

Lyrics

Verse 1
They said your name
Like a rumor in a church hall
Soft and sharp
Like a splinter in a love song
"You'll lose your head
You'll lose your heart"
I laughed it off
Then you lit my dark

Pre-Chorus
Your hand on my knee in the corner
Your eyes saying stay
Just stay
Every red flag feels like a flower
When you look at me that way (that way)

Chorus
They told me you were no good
That the lady was a warning sign
But I couldn't stay away from you
Couldn't cut your name from mine
Should've turned and walked right past
Like I never seen your face before
But I couldn't let you go
Couldn't let you go
Even knowing what I'd pay you for

Verse 2
You talk in sparks
Turn cheap wine into confession
Every joke
Twists tight into obsession
My friends all stare
At the bruises on my pride
"Baby
That's not love"
But you call
And I'm outside

Pre-Chorus
You say you're gonna change in the morning
I say it too
Then I fold
Every soft word feels like a promise
Every promise just gets old (so old)

Chorus
They told me you were no good
That the lady was a warning sign
But I couldn't stay away from you
Couldn't cut your name from mine
Should've turned and walked right past
Like I never seen your face before
But I couldn't let you go
Couldn't let you go
Even as you closed that door

Bridge
Maybe I'm tired of being careful
Maybe I'm scared to be alone
Is it love
Or just the habit
Of answering your phone? (oh no)

Chorus
They told me you were no good
That the lady was a warning sign
But I couldn't stay away from you
Couldn't cut your name from mine
If loving you's a losing bet
I'm still laying all my heart on the floor
'Cause I couldn't let you go
Couldn't let you go
And I don't wanna lie anymore
