The Gray Horizon
by John Belknap
Lyrics
(Intro)
(A sudden, sharp orchestral stab like a heartbeat, followed by the distorted ringing of a telephone that blends into a fast, panicked guitar riff)
(Verse 1 - Your Baritone)
The phone line crackled like a lightning strike
"John, come quickly," a voice I didn't like
I left the office in a blurred and frantic haze
The world was burning in a sudden, scarlet blaze
I gripped the wheel until my knuckles turned to white
Pushing through the shadows of a sudden, midday night
Then I saw the chrome, the twisted steel and glass
I prayed to every god for the scene to let me pass
But the silver paint was Amber’s, and the pickup truck was tall
And in that wreckage, I could see the ending of it all
(Verse 2 - Low, Heavy Chugging Riffs)
The hospital was sterile, smelling of the grave
A woman in a dark suit with no one left to save
She spoke the words like stones that sank into my chest
"They’re gone," she whispered—and I failed the final test
The floor gave way, the ceiling turned to black
I fell into a void and I never quite came back
Four days of nothing in a white and hollow bed
Wishing I was lying with my girls among the dead
(Chorus - Powerful and Melancholic)
Forty years of ashes, forty years of grey
Working every hour just to keep the ghosts away
(Soprano Echo: Amber... Victoria...)
The shaking and the sweating, the medicine and smoke
Searching for a punchline in a cruel and bitter joke
Oh, Amber... oh, Victoria... the world has lost its light
I’m walking through the winter of a forty-year-long night
(Bridge - Slowing to a Doom-Metal pace)
I held three jobs to keep the silence out of mind
Leaving every soulmate dream a thousand miles behind
The green smoke rises in the quiet of the room
A temporary shield against the crushing weight of doom
Decades turn to dust, and my hair is turning silver
While the memory of that wreckage makes my spirit shake and shiver
(Guitar Solo - Chaotic, weeping, and blues-influenced)
(Final Chorus - Maximum Orchestral Weight)
Forty years of ashes, forty years of grey
Working every hour just to keep the ghosts away
(Soprano Echo: We're still here... John...)
The shaking and the sweating, the medicine and smoke
Searching for a punchline in a cruel and bitter joke
I’m walking through the winter of a forty-year-long night!
(Outro - Long, Slow Fade to Silence)
(Soprano Echo: Sleep now...)
Just another shift...
Just another day...
(Music becomes thinner, leaving only a heartbeat-like bass drum)
Wait for the smoke...
To carry me away...
(The heartbeat slows and eventually stops, fading into the sound of wind)
