Hand Me Down Heart

Lyrics

Verse 1

Daddy never talked much about love
Didn't have to say a word
I watched him bring Mama coffee
Every morning before work

He'd pull her chair out at supper
Still held her hand at church
And somewhere in those little things
I learned what love was worth

Chorus

I've got a hand me down heart
Passed from one good man to another
Built on promises kept
And putting someone else above ya

It ain't perfect but it's honest
And it knows where it belongs
I didn't build it all myself
I just carried it along

And if I love you right
It's because from the very start
I was blessed with a hand me down heart

Verse 2

Granddad used to call her sweetheart
Even after fifty years
Still smiled when she walked in a room
Like she was standing there in tears

I guess some things get passed along
Without a word being said
The way you treat the ones you love
Becomes the road your children tread

Chorus

I've got a hand me down heart
Passed from one good man to another
Built on promises kept
And putting someone else above ya

It ain't perfect but it's honest
And it knows where it belongs
I didn't build it all myself
I just carried it along

And if I love you right
It's because from the very start
I was blessed with a hand me down heart

Bridge

Someday if we're lucky
And the good Lord gives us years
Maybe there'll be a little boy watchin'
Learning what he's seeing here

And maybe he'll understand
What took me years to see
Love ain't found in grand gestures
It's found in loyalty

Final Chorus

I've got a hand me down heart
Passed from one good man to another
Built on faith and sacrifice
And always choosing one another

It ain't perfect but it's honest
And it grows a little stronger every year
I thank God for the men who showed me
How to keep somebody near

And if I love you right
It's because from the very start
I was blessed with a hand me down heart

Yeah, I was blessed with a hand me down heart
