What Had Happened Was

Lyrics

Intro
Mud on my boots
Smoke in my lungs
I said, "Bryan, what’s up?"
He just shrugged his tongue like—

Chorus
He said, "What had happened was…"
(oh no, here we go)
It’s never good when it starts like that
You already know
He said, "What had happened was…"
(yeah, that’s a bad sign)
If it starts with that line
We in trouble this time

Verse 1
I said, "Bryan, what’s goin’ on?
Phone blowin’ up, yo, what you done?"
He said, "Listen, it ain’t my fault
I was mindin’ my business, then the gator jumped the wall"
Truck in the ditch, boat on the road
Somebody’s four-wheeler halfway sunk in the crow
Beer on the porch, cops at the gate
"Before you get mad, man, you gotta hear me explain"

Chorus
He said, "What had happened was…"
(oh no, here we go)
It’s never good when it starts like that
You already know
He said, "What had happened was…"
(yeah, that’s a bad sign)
If it starts with that line
We in trouble this time

Verse 2
"See, I only meant to ride ‘round the bend
Then Bubba said floor it, I was tryin’ to impress him"
Storm came quick, sky turned green
Next thing I know, I’m on somebody’s trampoline
Dog start barkin’, fence fell through
I swear that raccoon said, 'Man, that’s on you'
I’mma fix everything, don’t be mad, don’t fuss
Just let me start again with ‘what had happened was’"

Chorus
He said, "What had happened was…"
(oh no, here we go)
It’s never good when it starts like that
You already know
He said, "What had happened was…"
(yeah, that’s a bad sign)
If it starts with that line
We in trouble this time

Bridge
Ask Bryan what’s goin’ on
He’ll spin that story long
By the time that he gets done
You forgot how it begun (c’mon)

Chorus
He said, "What had happened was…"
(oh no, here we go)
It’s never good when it starts like that
You already know
He said, "What had happened was…"
(last time, one more lie)
If it starts with that line
We in trouble this time
