ILLUMINATION
I — BEFORE THE DAWN
(A single piano note. Very distant strings. Almost no rhythm.)
I wandered where the light had disappeared,
Through silent halls built out of all my fears.
The stars above me seemed a thousand miles away,
And every road I knew had faded into grey.
I carried every wound beneath my skin,
A thousand battles no one saw within.
But underneath the silence, something stayed—
A little warmth the darkness couldn't take away.
PRELUDE
(Solo violin slowly rises.)
And when the night became unbearable,
When even hope was difficult to name,
I heard a distant melody...
(A soft female choir enters.)
Ahhh...
Ooooooh...
Like something calling me beyond the rain.
---
CHORUS I — FIRST LIGHT
(Piano expands. Violins bloom around the vocal.)
When the morning finds me
After all I've lost,
I will follow where it leads me,
No matter what it costs.
The silence starts to open,
The frozen sky turns gold,
And somewhere in the distance
I feel my heart unfold.
(Choir floats underneath.)
Ahhhhh...
Ooooooh...
(French horns quietly enter.)
For the first time in forever,
I can see beyond the night.
---
II — THE RISING
(Cellos and low strings begin a slow pulse. Orchestral percussion gradually builds.)
I used to fear the shape of every shadow,
Afraid that it would swallow me again.
But every step I took into the darkness
Taught my eyes to see beyond the end.
There were moments I wanted to surrender,
Moments when the sky refused to shine.
Yet something deep inside my broken spirit
Kept whispering—
“There is still a life behind this night.”
(Orchestra swells.)
And so I walked.
And so I breathed.
And so I stayed.
---
CHORUS II — THE OPENING SKY
(Different melody. Larger orchestra. Choir in rich harmony.)
Look how the heavens are unfolding,
Like curtains drawn across the blue.
Every forgotten piece of me
Is finding its way back into view.
The rain that once surrounded me
Becomes a river carrying me home.
And all the places I was frightened of
No longer feel unknown.
(Choir rises in layered harmony.)
Ooooooh—ahhhhh—
Ooooooh—ahhhhh—
(Violins soar.)
There is beauty in becoming
What the darkness couldn't destroy.
---
III — BETWEEN WORLDS
(Everything suddenly becomes intimate. Piano and solo cello.)
Maybe I was never meant
To return to who I was.
Maybe every broken road
Was leading somewhere new.
Maybe the person I kept searching for
Was waiting underneath the ruins...
(Whisper)
...waiting for me.
(Silence.)
Then—
(One distant bell.)
I looked toward the horizon.
And the horizon looked back.
---
CHORUS III — THE ASCENSION
(Full symphonic orchestra. Massive choir, but still melodic rather than chant-like.)
Above the mountains, beyond the clouds,
A thousand silver wings arise.
The night retreats without a sound
Before the fire in the skies.
I leave behind the weight I carried,
I release what cannot remain.
And with every breath I'm taking,
I become something new again.
(Choir sustains enormous harmony.)
Ahhhhhhhhh...
Ooooooooh...
(French horns and strings climb.)
The world is brighter than I remembered,
And the dawn is calling me by name.
---
BRIDGE — THE MOMENT
(Orchestra disappears. One piano. Barely audible heartbeat percussion.)
I thought illumination
Would come like thunder.
But it came quietly.
A breath.
A tear.
A single ray
Through a broken window.
(Solo voice)
And suddenly...
I understood.
I didn't need to escape the darkness.
I only needed
to keep walking toward the light.
---
FINAL MOVEMENT — ILLUMINATION
(The orchestra begins from almost nothing.)
First, piano.
Then cello.
Then violins.
Then horns.
Then the choir.
Everything gradually rises.
LEAD:
The night has given way...
CHOIR:
Ahhhhh...
LEAD:
The silence has become a song...
CHOIR:
Ooooooh...
LEAD:
And every scar upon my soul
Has brought me to this moment.
(Massive orchestral rise.)
The stars are burning through the heavens,
The earth is breathing underneath,
And somewhere between who I was
And everything I'm yet to be—
(Music pauses.)
—I finally found myself.
(FULL ORCHESTRA ERUPTS.)
CHOIR:
AHHHHHHHHHHH—
OOOOOOOOOOH—
(Strings soar above the orchestra.)
LEAD:
No longer waiting for the dawn...
(Choir responds softly.)
The dawn is here.
(Final orchestral crescendo.)
OUTRO
(Everything falls away except piano and distant choir.)
CHOIR:
Illumination...
Illumination...
(Final piano note.)
LEAD, whispered:
And the darkness
was never the end.
(Silence.)
