BEFORE WE FORGOT HOW TO LIVE
by MARAKANSKY
Lyrics
INTRO
Sometimes I sit and wonder...
What happened to us?
I remember when being grounded meant
you couldn't leave the house...
Now they tell these kids,
“Get out!”
And they don't even look up from the screen.
Maybe we didn't know how good we had it...
VERSE 1 — THE NINETIES
I miss the days when the streets were our internet,
No Wi-Fi, no passwords, no digital silhouette.
A bicycle, a football, a couple friends outside,
Sun going down, but we still didn't wanna say goodbye.
Ninety-something, man, those days felt different,
No notifications telling us how we should be living.
No likes, no followers, no numbers on a screen,
We were broke as hell sometimes, but somehow felt free.
Mom said, “Come home!” — we said, “Five more minutes,”
Running through the neighborhood, every kid was in it.
Our punishment was simple:
“Go upstairs, you're grounded!”
And somehow being stuck at home
was the worst thing we'd encountered.
Now kids got everything but still want something more,
Controllers in their hands, eyes glued to the screen all day long.
Back then, getting kicked out was something we feared,
Now parents say, “Get outside!”
And they don't even hear.
PRE-CHORUS
What did we trade for convenience?
What did we lose for connection?
We're talking to everybody,
but nobody feels the affection.
Everybody's connected,
but everybody feels alone...
Maybe the world got smaller
when we carried it inside our phones.
CHORUS
Take me back to the nineties,
when life was rough but beautiful.
When we didn't need the whole world
just to feel like we belonged.
Take me back to the streets,
where a friend was all you needed.
Where tomorrow wasn't guaranteed,
but tonight we were still breathing.
No screens between our eyes,
no algorithm telling us who to be.
Just music, laughter, broken dreams,
and a little bit of honesty.
Take me back...
before we forgot how to live.
VERSE 2 — WHAT DID WE BECOME?
What the hell happened to the world we knew?
Men questioning themselves, women questioning too.
Everybody searching for an identity to wear,
Changing who they are just to fit somewhere.
Men wanna be women, women wanna be men,
Everybody asking, “Who am I?” again.
What did this life do? Where did we lose the track?
We keep changing who we are, but can't change ourselves back.
They tell you every boundary is a thing to break,
Every value is outdated, every truth is fake.
And if you stand up and say, “Something ain't right,”
They'll turn you into the villain for refusing to comply.
I'm watching generations growing up confused,
Trying to find themselves in a world that's been abused.
A thousand different voices screaming what to believe,
While the human soul is begging,
“Just let me breathe.”
I'm not saying hate them —
I'm saying ask why.
Why are we so afraid
to question what we glorify?
Why does speaking your conscience
make you enemy number one?
When did asking honest questions
become something we should run from?
I remember when character meant something more,
When respect wasn't something you bought from a store.
When a man's word meant something,
when a woman's grace was prized,
Before everything became content
for somebody else's eyes.
Maybe I'm old school,
maybe that's what they'll say,
But I refuse to let the noise
take my voice away.
You can call me backwards,
you can call me blind,
But I'll keep searching for the truth
with my own damn mind.
PRE-CHORUS 2
Because somewhere underneath
all the noise and all the lies,
There's a human being searching
for a reason to survive.
We're surrounded by information,
but starving for what's real...
And sometimes you need silence
just to remember what you feel.
CHORUS
Take me back to the nineties,
when life was rough but beautiful.
When we didn't need the whole world
just to feel like we belonged.
Take me back to the streets,
where a friend was all you needed.
Where tomorrow wasn't guaranteed,
but tonight we were still breathing.
No screens between our eyes,
no algorithm telling us who to be.
Just music, laughter, broken dreams,
and a little bit of honesty.
Take me back...
before we forgot how to live.
VERSE 3 — THE WORLD WE BUILT
Everybody's got a voice,
but nobody wants the truth.
Say something they don't like
and they'll come after you.
Everybody wants freedom
until your freedom disagrees.
Everybody wants the truth
until the truth makes them uneasy.
We're watching values disappear
while they tell us it's progression.
Every generation asking,
“What became of our direction?”
We're connected to the world
but disconnected from ourselves,
Collecting digital friends
while our real ones need our help.
We built machines to save us time,
then gave them all our time.
Built screens to connect us,
then forgot how to look someone in the eyes.
We wanted everything faster,
everything bigger, everything new...
And somewhere along the way,
we forgot what we were trying to do.
Maybe the problem isn't technology.
