Frightening Scarecrow

Lyrics

Intro
In the field
He’s standing still
Burlap face
Moonlit grin

Verse 1
I saw him swaying
By the rusted fence
One straw hand raised
Like a warning sign
Black thread eyes
Stitched to my skin
He knew my name
Before I ran

Pre-Chorus
Tick, tick, tick
In the bones
Click, click, click
On the road
He leans in close
Through the grain
And my breath turns thin
Inside the rain

Chorus
Frightening scarecrow
Stay away
Frightening scarecrow
Call my name
Frightening scarecrow
Break my sleep
Frightening scarecrow
Out of the field

Verse 2
Old nails trembling
In the wooden frame
Crows on his shoulders
Like a crown of blame
Mud on his boots
Cold in the ground
Every step he takes
Makes a hollow sound

Pre-Chorus
Tick, tick, tick
In the bones
Click, click, click
On the road
He leans in close
Through the grain
And my breath turns thin
Inside the rain

Chorus
Frightening scarecrow
Stay away
Frightening scarecrow
Call my name
Frightening scarecrow
Break my sleep
Frightening scarecrow
Out of the field

Bridge
Breakdown
Shh
He bends
I bend
He wins
Wooden jaw
Open wide
No soul
Just wires inside
I hear the corn
Say my sins
I hear the corn
Say his name

Verse 3
Now he’s moving
When the dawn is low
Dragging shadows
Through the row by row
If I look back
He looks back first
Burlap mouth
With a fevered curse
I toss my fear
Into the wind
But the field just laughs
And pulls me in

Pre-Chorus
Tick, tick, tick
In the bones
Click, click, click
On the road
He leans in close
Through the grain
And my breath turns thin
Inside the rain

Chorus
Frightening scarecrow
Stay away
Frightening scarecrow
Call my name
Frightening scarecrow
Break my sleep
Frightening scarecrow
Out of the field

Outro
In the field
He’s still there
Burlap face
Empty stare
I won’t look
I won’t see
Frightening scarecrow
Watching me
