Lyrics

Verse 1
Tamara Briggs said, “Not again”
Last place she’d go, that’s where it began
One bad bet and a wedding band
Gone in the dust, gone in her hand

Now she’s at the track for the money count
Not for a man in a cap and crown
Then Elec Monroe rolled up slow
New to the lane, but he got that glow

Pre-Chorus
He said, “You look mad, but you look good”
She said, “Boy, you read me wrong like you would”
He laughed, she rolled her eyes
Still she kept that glance on the prize

Chorus
Tamara Briggs at the racetrack
Said “never again,” then he came back
Elec Monroe got her heart racing
Now she’s front-row, no more pacing
Tamara Briggs at the racetrack
Funny how the fool got her right back
(Checkered flag, checkered flag)
She swore off love, now she’s chasing that

Verse 2
He’s rookie clean with a crooked grin
Keeps stalling out, then he taps back in
She brings snacks in a paper sack
He calls it luck, she calls it a trap

“Do you always talk this slick?”
“Only when I’m trying not to quit”
She says, “You’re trouble, kid”
He says, “Yeah, but you like it a bit”

Pre-Chorus
He missed a turn, she snorted loud
He bowled through charm like a scared little clown
But he fixed her tire, held the gate
And she hated how sweet that looked on his face

Bridge
Late-night fries, a busted cup
He said, “I’m trying if you’ll show me up”
She said, “You got nerve”
He said, “I got you, that’s the curve”

And when he won by a sliver’s edge
He kissed her laugh, not a single pledge
She shook her head, said “Boy, please”
Then leaned in close like, “Try that again for me”
