Our Escape
by Angel Thomas
Lyrics
[Intro - eerie carnival music, distant laughter FX, ethereal pads, hushed spoken Vocaloid lead]
Shh…
Lady at my heel, and the moon won’t behave,
Old paint peeling off the rides like a grave.
Ferris wheel squeaks in the cold night air,
And the shadows keep blinking like they know we’re there.
[Verse 1 - heartbeat kick, mellow keys, spooky acoustic plucks, ghostly female vocals]
We came through the gate where the dead lights swing,
Rust in the rails and a broken brass ring.
Lady’s little paws on the cracked-up floor,
Hear that carnival cry from the boarded-up door?
I swear I saw a face in the mirror flash,
Then it disappeared in a static crack.
We moved real slow through the dust and decay,
Every step like a spell trying to fade away.
[Pre-Chorus - haunting trance arps, rising violin, tension building, whispered ad-libs]
Don’t breathe too loud, don’t look too long,
Something in the dark knows where we belong.
Lady, stay close, keep your body low,
If it hears our hearts, it’ll never let us go.
[Chorus - dramatic bounce drop, deep phonk sub, sinister orchestral hits, layered ghost harmonies]
Run, run, through the haunted glow,
Through the shattered dream where the cold winds blow.
Lady by my side, we don’t make a sound,
We just keep on moving till we’re homeward bound.
Run, run, past the laughing rides,
Past the eyes in the dark and the things that hide.
If the night wants us, it won’t take us down,
We’re coming out alive, we’re coming back home now.
[Verse 2 - darker low-end, creepy violin stabs, hushed spoken phrases, eerie melodic pads]
Then a loud boom cracked through the crooked hall,
Like thunder in a cage, like a tower about to fall.
Lady jumped fast and I nearly screamed,
We ran through a fun house bent out of dream.
Mirrors on mirrors, a hundred wrong faces,
Hallways twisting into impossible spaces.
I kept my hand on the wall, held tight to the beat,
Trying not to wake what was stalking our feet.
Saw something glide where the corner went black,
Just a shape and a chill and a breath on my back.
[Pre-Chorus - suspenseful build, creepy carnival music fragments, whispery Vocaloid doubles]
Don’t breathe too loud, don’t look too long,
Something in the dark knows where we belong.
Lady, stay close, keep your body low,
If it hears our hearts, it’ll never let us go.
[Chorus - fuller bounce drop, thicker bass, soaring ethereal top line, eerie harmony stack]
[Bridge - stripped-back keys, distant violin, intimate spoken vocals, fading reverb]
Then the maze let go like a bad dream cracked,
And the porch light called us through the black.
Lady shook off the fear from her silver coat,
I kissed her head and felt my heartbeat slow.
No more shadows in the window frame,
No more haunted screams calling out our names.
Just the hum of home and the morning air,
And a little warm dog curled safe right there.
[Outro - soft pads, gentle plucks, ghostly lullaby vocal, tape-warped fade]
Back home… back home…
Lady and me, where the lights are known.
Back home… back home…
Safe and sound, and the dark is gone.
