I Once Was A Foolish Man

Lyrics

[Verse 1 - tender acoustic piano, warm organ swells, reflective male lead]
I once was a foolish man, I built my house upon the sand
I thought the storms of life would pass me by, I thought I’d make a stand
I toiled and worked with all my might, but trouble found me anyhow
And no peace of mind could I ever find, I was sinking low until now

[Pre-Chorus - choir begins to rise, drums slowly entering, hopeful lift]
Then I met the Man named Jesus, and I tore that old house down
Built a brand-new life on mercy, with my feet on solid ground
If you anchor your foundation in the Rock that will remain
That Rock is Christ, He’ll never fail you, He’ll never let you down

[Chorus - full choir, powerful handclaps, soaring organ, gospel uplift]
I met the Man named Jesus, and I tore that old house down
Built a new one on the solid ground
If you anchor your foundation in the solid Rock
And that Rock is Christ, He’ll never let you down

[Verse 2 - steady gospel groove, rich bassline, testimony feel, choir harmonies]
I’ve lived in this new house now for nigh on forty years
And it has stood through every storm and every flood of tears
I did not build on shifting sand, but held to Jesus’ hand
And I’ll trust my Lord forevermore, I’m safe in His command

[Bridge - stripped back piano and choir, heartfelt lead vocal, reverent build]
If you have no peace of mind, then Jesus, you must find
He’ll never leave you, night or day, He’s faithful all the time
Just call upon His holy name and you will not stay the same
For He’s the Truth, the Life, the Way, forevermore He reigns

[Final Chorus - triumphant full band, choir in call-and-response, soaring ad-libs]
When you meet the Man named Jesus, and you tear that old house down
Build a new one on the solid ground
If you anchor your foundation in the solid Rock
That Rock is Christ, He’ll never let you down
Oh, that Rock is Christ, He’ll never let you down
