last day of summer

Last Day of Summer
My life feels like the last day of summer,
when the sun is slipping away
and winter comes early,
cold at the door,
while I'm left outside
with no way back in.
I was thirteen,
and the world had already decided
I should learn love and life
from concrete streets
instead of warm hands.
Nobody wanted me,
so the night became my guardian
and hunger became my teacher.
I left pieces of my heart
in alleyways,
in doorways,
in every place I slept
just long enough
to call it home.
Now there's only a small piece left—
just enough to keep me breathing,
just enough to survive.
I fought for every bite of food,
every hour of sleep,
every chance to wash the dirt
from a child
who should have been safe.
I was just a kid
trying to stay alive
in a world that looked away.
And I still wonder—
where were the people who made me?
Why did they let winter come so soon?
Why did they leave me alone
with only the voices in my head
to warn me of danger?
Those voices kept me safe once,
whispering who to run from,
who meant harm.
But now they turn on me,
sharp as broken glass,
telling me I'm the one
I should fear.
And I'm trying—
trying to hold on,
trying to speak my truth,
trying to stay here
even when it hurts.
Because somewhere beneath
the cold,
the hunger,
the years,
there is still that thirteen-year-old boy
standing in the fading sunlight,
waiting for summer
to come back.
